DIY The Best of the Best!

Everyone is overwhelmed by the recession and are starting to think outside the box when making the next big purchase. In my case, I try and find things I already have and try to re-make it in a way that I dont have to buy an entirely new item. My husband and I have been (for the past two years) making DIY projects for Christmas Presents for our family members and they have been a huge hit! From coasters, art work, board games and candles!!

I love the idea that anything can be made out of anything else and that is my reason for being addicted to Pinterest. DIY is a way to reuse what is not longer usable and that makes our imagination limitless. Please share any DIY projects that you were able to accomplish and any that could be used as a gift! We are always looking for new and exciting ways to make things with our hands instead of it being "stored bought"

Your comment dosnt need to be limited to gifts... think baby, weddings, outdoor furniture or anything else that woudld work!
Social Sustainability from the Gamers Perspective

Social connectedness can easily be seen as an ever evolving creature that with change comes a new meaning of what is truly social suitability. Nearly 40 years ago, the telephone was the only means of connection between large groups of people with space between them, or the government meeting places is where all the information of the town was displayed. Through technological evolution we experience the radio, television, internet, and now in the 21st century we have a new monster to deal with, gamers. What purpose do they serve and how are they changing what it means to be socially engaged and connected to society? There have been many reports of how games affect our children but there is another aspect I wish to discuss and the more real ideal of how games have influenced our daily lives, because believe it or not, we are all gamers now.
With the 21st century technological advancement we have become pre-programmed to group individuals without realizing that we limit ourselves and in-turn group ourselves in categories of minorities. One of the first home gaming systems came out in 1985. It was called Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and many would connect this consul to the genius creation of Super Mario. Since then there has been a few dozen systems that have come up to compete with this new economically growing genre of profit, such as Atari 7800 in 1986, Sega in 1986, Sega Genesis in 1989 and Nintendo Game Boy in 1989. All of these consuls never held a candle to NES simply because it was able to connect to the gamers on a personal level that made its characters and games become so popular. These strategy based games introduced problem solving in a new way which in turn gave people a new interaction of communication. These games gave the public a way to communicate that was beyond anything anyone ever dreamed of. They were able to escape into a plain of existence that was thought to be only accomplished in dreams, never reality. When Nintendo SNES had its debut in 1991 the gaming industry really took off. With three titles including Super Mario World, F-Zero, and Pilotwings being its only games available during its launch day it received almost a perfect score from gamers around the world. And that was just the beginning.
With gaming on the rise, does this mean that the natural order of social sustainability will diminish? Many think this is the solid truth for without a specific type of interaction there can be no social understanding and therefore no social connectedness that gives way to social sustainability. This was the end of the world as we knew it to those born before the video game, or was it in actuality a change of certain climatic experience that was never known to exist in our world and would forever change the way we would communicate? We were introduced to the next six home consuls that would change the gaming world forever; Sony’s Playstation 1 (1995) and then Playstation 2 (2000), Nintendo 64 (1996), Sega Dreamcast (1999), Microsoft Xbox (2001) and Nintendo’s GameCube (2001). The connection created between gamers and these consuls is impossible to be explained to those who have never actually played one. It’s simply something that must be experienced. Even today, fans of previous generations of consuls can look back and reminisce upon game consuls humble beginnings with their friends and have a nostalgic look into the past. The video games and the consuls we played create a lasting impression on us, and anyone who experiences the same movie or the same book would agree that that experience links people together. This is no different between gamers. An entire community of people, an entire culture has been created. This will be explained and repeated through the generations.
Games require one-on-one contact with a television screen and allow no social connection, true? False. There have been new technological advancements that allow gamers to interact through microphones online and allow you to talk to someone in the next room or across the world in real time. But even in the beginning families and friends have gathered in the same room to enjoy a video game together, whether it’s to play Pong, Mario cart racing or to swing a controller around like a maniac in Wii sports. It is rumored that the next advancement in on-line gaming is what is known through Apple iPhones as “face time”. It can even be speculated that when one’s ideas can be shown to others on such a large scale that revolutions are born. This is what a video game allows, mass media and connection with no social barriers that can change the way we think about our daily lives. An imaginary world that has no limitations and the story has such emotional and ethically profound elements that last throughout generations. This is what Mario has become, a legend.
Games allow individuals to escape reality and become admirers in a false reality that makes them lose touch with the real world, true? False. Games may give a person the opportunity to escape into another world of their choosing but it also allows them to connect with the world that they live in now through another’s perspective. What are movies and books but a video game that you can not interact with? Movies and books are created to entertain people, short and sweet. An individual pays to watch and then leave with a deeper understanding of their own lives or with a sense of seeing something noteworthy. This is what gaming allows but on a deeper level. You are able to interact with characters that sometimes seem “out of this world” but are more apart of what you believe in than what you understand. You find bonds and connections with these characters that were man made and created through an artistic point of view and have social sustainable awareness. When you play a video game that someone has made, your are playing through a piece of that person’s imagination. The fantastic, outrageous, or funny thoughts in someone else’s head can be yours not only to enjoy from a third person perspective, but to also participate in, make choices and direct the character through an imaginary world. Even if you are unaware of the connection, playing a video game connects you with the minds of other people in the gaming community, and especially to the minds of those who created it since it is their imagination brought to a screen that you are playing around in. An idea can last a lifetime but a game’s idea can go down in history, captivating and inspiring new generations with it.
Currently we have four major consuls dividing gamers attention; Xbox 360 (2005), Playstation 3 (2006) and Nintendo’s Wii (2006) and the ever evolving Gaming Computer’s. Today we see an even greater efficiency in social connectedness based on just these three main contenders. With Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 using technology at its finest, they have been able to use the gamer as a tool to get more socially and physically engaged with not only the game but the other players. All home consuls released after the Nintendo 64 (1996) have been four player based because of the huge success of all Mario based games. This new concept of multiple player type games is what led to the new idea of using movement and exercise into the mix. Wii burst on to the scene with motion mechanics in a controller, giving the audience an even more intuitive and active approach to being able to interact with a video game. Xbox Kinect and Playstation Move have expanded upon this idea with the Xbox Kinect and the Playstation Move. You use your body or a joy stick in your hand very similar to how the Wii is played while using the Playstation move, but with a much improved tracking system allowing for wider range of movement. With the Kinect you are the controller, one only needs to be able to move to play. With the Gaming Computer’s we are all introduced to many styles of the gaming franchise including; land mines, solitary, World of War Craft, RuneScape, and Farmville. Computer games incorporate massive amounts of people online who are talking to each other with a common end goals to either beat the game or to get to the next level or to simply socialize. Games like Just Dance are the new wave in entertainment for social events and parties. Multiple people can participate or sit and watch their friends look really silly or really cool as they dance. With there being a new technological breakthrough in the year 2013 we will all be holding our breath to see what the newest feat will be.
Everyone has heard of the infamous name’s of Mario, Link, Sephiroth and Sonic. Is it such a prosperous idea that it is better known than George Washington? Is Mario Brothers more popular than our own United States president’s name throughout the world? How we socially connect with each other in similar communities and others that have polar opposite view points can somehow share a common thread as the imaginary concept of gaming? We view ourselves as individuals and as a particular group of people, thus limiting ourselves to the unknown. We limit ourselves every day when we refuse to interact in a new template of technological advancement and therefore we limit our social engagement with one another. While others face the future with bright eyes, others look to the past and wonder where we went wrong. Why look at the past, when the future shows such promise, hope and gaming potential! We are more culturally aware when Japanese games arrive on United States borders. These games give us inside to their art style, their way of life by how their characters interact and how romance is pursued. We are more socially and economically aware of our neighboring nations because of what the gaming arena has shown us in just 40 years. Gaming has pushed the boundaries of technology, visual art, story telling and our everyday social engagement.
In short, the gaming industry is not going to disappear and it is thriving in our nation and in others. We all own phones and thus we all have apps on them; these are all types of games. Every app on your phone is a gamer’s view of the world that allows you to either find the closest gas station, movie, or fast food. Others are easily recognizable as Scramble, Tetris or World of War Craft (WOW). No matter how you shake it or put it in the blender it all comes out the same, we are all apart of the gaming industry and we are all apart of a new evolutionary socially connectedness that was never foreseen and will soon evolve again into something even more imaginary.
